Chapter 1
When I was 9 months pregnant, Grover Bairstow's unforgettable love, Serena Culver, drugged me with abortion pills.
Because of that, I suffered severe uterine contractions. However, Grover only asked me to endure that pain because Serena was giving birth on the very same day.
To prevent me from making any trouble, he even had me hang upside down on the cat climber.
He said, "I heard that blood reflux can delay the time in a woman's labor. Even if you really have to give birth, you must wait until Serena's child comes out first. I promised her that I would make her child my first one."
The excruciating pain caused by the abortion pill made me writhe on the ground. I cried and begged Grover to take me to the hospital.
But he kicked me in the abdomen with no mercy at all.
"Serena is such a kind girl. She would never have drugged you! She's unlike you, who is a wicked, jealous woman! You must have secretly put something into her meal. Otherwise, she wouldn't have had premature labor!
"Besides, you're already in the late stage of your pregnancy. Even if it were really the abortion pill, it wouldn't be a big thing to you."
Later, after Serena gave birth smoothly, Grover finally remembered me. He asked the housekeeper if I was still making a fuss.
Unexpectedly, the housekeeper trembled as she replied, "Mr. Bairstow...
"Mrs. Bairstow and the baby are dead already."
***
The combination of abdominal cramps and uterine contractions, coupled with the lack of oxygen caused by long-term inversion, almost made me pass out.
I couldn't help but feel pain both mentally and physically. Suddenly, I fell to the ground with the cat climber.
Although I instinctively put my hands before my belly, it wasn't much of a help. Some warm liquid gushed out from under me.
I could feel that my water had broken, and my baby was trying to get out of my womb.
Desperate, I cried for the housekeeper, Leila Pruit.
"Leila, send me to the hospital. I really can't hold it much longer."
But Leila walked over slowly, eating her snacks while looking at the dirty water on the ground with disgust.
She sneered at me, "Frieda Worley, just save it. Mr. Bairstow isn't at home now, so there's no need to act like this.
"Anyway, even if you die here today, nobody will care. Mr. Bairstow asked me to stay just to keep an eye on you, you know? Don't try to compete with Ms. Culver. Who do you think you are?"
With that, she covered her nose and forcibly hung me upside down on the cat climber again.
Blood gushed out from under her again. Leila slapped me hard before making a phone call.
Grover had just arranged for Serena's hospitalization when he received this phone call.
His face was filled with impatience as he snapped on the phone, "Just ignore that! If she gives birth earlier than Serena, you won't have your salary for this year, do you hear me?"
With a smug face, Leila raised her eyebrows at me.
As if to make me completely give up, she added, "But Mrs. Bairstow is bleeding."
At the same time, I fell again. My painful cries made Grover hesitate.
"Put her down first. I..."
Before Grover could finish his words, a coquettish voice interrupted him.
"Grover, I don't feel hurt in my abdomen anymore. I think I may not give birth today.
"Pregnant women are all like this, especially when they are at a late stage of pregnancy. We always think we're about to give birth, and it's normal to have some bleeding. Didn't the doctor just say that there is some time before my labor?"
Serena and I got pregnant in the same month.
We were all 9 months pregnant now and hadn't even reached the due date. If she hadn't secretly drugged me, I wouldn't have had severe uterine contractions.
But Grover always believed whatever Serena said.
He changed his mind and said coldly on the phone, "No need to send her to the hospital. Just keep an eye on her. Don't listen to her before I come back. She always likes to compete with Serena, even when it comes to giving birth to a child. She really disgusts me!"
With that, he hung up the phone, and Leila looked at me with a gloating smile.
"See? I told you, Mr. Bairstow only cares about Ms. Culver. He won't blink even if you die today."
Then, she checked her message and said to me again, "But Ms. Culver is very kind.
"Afraid that you might get lonely, she specifically told me to bring her beloved pet to accompany you."
But that pet was a poisonous black widow spider!
Chapter 2
I saw a big spider crawl out of the box. Feeling helpless, I wanted to beg for mercy. But before I could make a sound, Leila left quickly as if running away.
Being attracted by the smell of blood, the spider quickly crawled towards me.
I wanted to escape, but my limbs were still tied tightly on the cat climber, and the severe pain left me with no strength to break free.
Soon, the spider crawled up my calf along the blood. Instantly, I got goosebumps all over.
At that moment, I seemed to have forgotten about the pain and fear, and all I wanted was to kill it.
But it seemed to have sensed my intention and suddenly jumped onto my abdomen.
The intense pain instantly poured in. I gave a shrill scream and then lost my strength.
My eyelids grew heavier and heavier, and I felt like I was about to die.
Just then, Leila appeared, cursing.
When she saw that I wasn't moving, she panicked a bit.
She slapped me hard several times before I suddenly regained some of my consciousness. I forced myself to stay sober and begged her to take me to the hospital.
I told her, "I got bitten by that spider. My baby will die."
But she released her grip on my hair and forcefully pressed my face to the ground.
"I knew it! You were just trying to trick me again. I thought you were really dead."
Under my resentful gaze, she became more and more excited.
She cursed, "Bitch, you know Mr. Bairstow loves Ms. Culver, yet you still wanna use the baby to secure your position as Mrs. Bairstow. I've long despised you. Look at you now. Gross and dirty. No man will want you!"
After cursing, she finally remembered that spider.
"Where's Ms. Culver's precious pet? What did you do to it?"
Leila looked around but couldn't find it. Out of fear, she was standing 1 meter away from me.
When she saw the black blood clot on the ground, she thought it was the spider's corpse, and she immediately became furious and kicked me in the abdomen.
"Bitch, how dare you! How dare you kill Ms. Culver's precious pet! How could you be so vicious?
"No wonder Mr. Bairstow dislikes you. Just keep lying down here and wait for death! That's what you deserved for killing Ms. Culver's pet!"
Then, Leila made a phone call and kept saying yes to the other party.
Before leaving, she turned on the air conditioning in the room and set the temperature to the lowest.
"Ms. Culver said that her pet prefers a damp and cold environment. Just enjoy it with it."
I was shivering from the cold, and the severe pain in my abdomen almost made me black out.
For a moment, I seemed to have heard a baby's cry. But my hands were tied up, and I couldn't even give a hug to my baby.
I had this baby after a drunk night with Grover, and he said he would keep this baby.
He also used to feel and listen to the baby's heartbeat through my belly.
I had dreamed countless times about the happiness of this family of three. But I had never expected that things between us would end up like this.
I said to my baby in my heart, "Baby, if you have your next life, go to a family that has love. Don't come to me and suffer with me again."
Tears fell down my face, and I could clearly feel that I was dying.
Suddenly, the door was opened from the outside.
The one who came was obviously startled by me, who was lying in a puddle of blood.
Out of instinct, I called out to him for help.
But he stepped back a bit, looking troubled.
He said to me, "I'm just an errand boy. Mr. Bairstow asked me to watch Frieda Worley cook for his wife. Please don't make things difficult for me."
Hearing those words, I somehow felt pain in my heart again.
My husband didn't believe that I was about to give birth, and he even asked me, who was dying, to cook for his mistress, disregarding that there were already dozens of doctors in the hospital to take care of her.
Even in an outsider's eyes, that mistress was his beloved wife.
How ironic.
I told the errand boy weakly, "I'm Frieda Worley. Please send me to the hospital."
He looked at me in fright. In the end, he chose to make a phone call.
"Mr. Bairstow, I'm at your home now. But the Frieda Worley you said was tied to the cat climber is now covered in blood. It really looks like she's dying. Should I send her to the hospital?"
Hearing these words, Grover sneered coldly, "She's really a drama queen. Just to avoid cooking for Serena, she actually found so many excuses."
Chapter 3
Grover's voice became firm as he added, "Don't send her to the hospital. My housekeeper told me that the blood on her was chicken blood. Tell her, if she wants my forgiveness, go cook now, or I won't go back today."
The errand boy still wanted to say something, but the phone was hung up directly.
Then, he walked up to me and confirmed that the blood really came out of me.
He frowned and hesitated for a while. In the end, he untied me.
"I don't know how you offended Mr. Bairstow. But I know this isn't right. Anyway, I can't just watch a pregnant woman die in front of me."
With that, he called an ambulance for me.
Before I could feel relieved, the doctor told me some bad news that made me fear again.
If I couldn't get the serum within ten minutes, I would die with no doubt.
But this kind of serum was very rare in America, and not many hospitals had it in stock.
However, when the doctor checked my information in the system, he was surprised and suddenly got hope.
"You're Mr. Bairstow's wife! Great! The hospital under his name will definitely have the serum!"
With that, he immediately dialed Grover's number.
"Mr. Bairstow, your wife was bitten by a black widow spider, and she's in critical danger now. Your hospital should still have the stock of the batch of serum transferred from abroad last year, right?"
Unexpectedly, Grover got furious after hearing these words.
He cursed at me on the phone, "What's wrong with you, Frieda? What black widow spider? Serena's pet spider is nonvenomous! You killed her pet, and now you've found someone to lie to me with you?"
Helpless, I shook my head in pain.
Grover's hospital had the serum only because Serena had been bitten before.
At that time, Grover worried about Serena so much. But he didn't know that Serena had that pet spider just to kill me.
The doctor was still trying to help me.
He said, "Mr. Bairstow, we're really doctors, and your wife is now really about to give birth. If we can't get the serum for her within ten minutes, she and the baby will both die."
"Then let them die! She always threatened me with her life and death, and yet she's still alive, safe and sound. I know when my baby will come out, okay? That's it!"
With that, Grover impatiently hung up the phone.
Before that, I seemed to have heard Serena asking Grover to buy her cakes with her coquettish voice.
The doctor gave me a sympathetic look and decided to take me to the hospital first.
He murmured, "Just send her to Mr. Bairstow's private hospital. The doctors there won't do nothing when seeing a dying pregnant woman, will they?"
But I didn't expect that, to please Serena, Grover asked his hospital to refuse to accept any pregnant women.
The ambulance stopped outside the hospital and couldn't get in.
At the same time, Grover, who had bought the cake, was having a phone call.
"Yes. Serena likes quiet places. No matter how much they offer, don't accept them and don't let them in."
I lay weakly and miserably on the stretcher. Suddenly, I had eye contact with Grover's driver.
The driver seemed to be unsure and glanced at me again. But I was already too weak to make any sound.
He walked up to Grover, pointing at me and saying to Grover, "Mr. Bairstow, that pregnant woman seems to be Mrs. Bairstow."
Grover turned around and saw a woman with blood-soaked hair, which was half covering her messy face.
He instantly turned his head back with disgust.
"That bitch can't be here."
The driver said cautiously, "But even if she's not, she's definitely in danger now. I think we should take her in."
Grover cast a glare at the driver.
"You wanna get fired? Serena is far more important than that woman. Even if she is Frieda, so what? She deserves it!"
With that, he cast a last look at me, as if he were looking at a dying person.
Then, he sent a voice message to Serena on his phone.
"Serena, I've bought your favorite cake. I'll get back in a minute."
Finally, the last glimmer of hope in my heart faded.
Even if I had already reached the entrance of the hospital, because of Grover, I still lost the chance of survival.
But I was unwilling to give in!
I asked the doctor for his phone and dialed a number that I had never dared to dial for years.
"Uncle Harvey, I've realized my mistake. Please help me and my baby!"
Chapter 4
My uncle, Harvey Worley, asked the doctor about my situation and address.
Then, he said to me, "Hold on. I'll have the serum delivered to you within 5 minutes."
His firm and mature voice made me wanna cry.
I realized that when I was in critical danger, only my family by blood could really help me.
Then, I was pushed back into the ambulance and was sent to the nearest hospital.
The doctors there were already prepared.
With the injection of serum, my mind finally cleared.
I could feel that I was lying on the operating table, and countless tools were scratching on and in my abdomen.
The doctors kept saying some professional terms that I couldn't understand, and everyone walked back and forth, carrying in trays of blood bags.
Within half an hour, the baby got out.
However, the operating room was eerily quiet, with only the crisp sound of medical tools colliding with plates.
I had a bad feeling. I gathered my strength and wanted to get up to see my baby.
But the doctor pressed me back down on the table.
"Don't move. We're still sewing the wound. Your baby absorbed most of the poison for you, which is why you could hold on for so long."
My mind instantly went blank, and tears fell down uncontrollably.
After the surgery, someone picked me up and drove me to a place.
"Ms. Worley, your uncle sent us here. You'll be taken care of at the Worley's mansion in the next couple of weeks."
The mansion, which had been vacant for a long time, was cleaned and refreshed, equipped with all the necessary hospital equipment. Harvey had even hired professional nurses and doctors to take care of me there.
"Frieda, have a good sleep. I'll take care of the rest of the things. Don't worry about it. I'll be back in a few days."
I lay on the soft bed, gradually falling asleep.
Serena had been occupying Grover's time for a whole, but there was still no sign of her giving birth.
At night, when Grover woke up from a nightmare, he suddenly remembered me.
In his eyes, I always made a fuss over some trifles. But today, he found that I hadn't called him for such a long time, which made him confirm that I was lying to him about giving birth.
Feeling a bit tired in his heart, he pinched his nose bridge, planning to go home and check on me.
Just then, Leila came over.
Grover loosened his collar and asked, "How's Frieda? Did she realize her mistake?"
Unexpectedly, Leila trembled all over, her lips turning white. She dared not look Grover in the eye.
"Well, Mr. Bairstow, Mrs. Bairstow is..."
"What? Tell me now!"
Grover became impatient, and Leila trembled again in fear.
She stammered, "Mrs. Bairstow and the baby are gone."
"What do you mean they're gone?"
Grover's eyes widened, and he somehow had a bad feeling. But he quickly regained his composure, telling himself that his guess just now was definitely wrong.
Leila kept stealing glances at Serena, afraid that she might say something wrong.
Then, she replied in a low voice, "They're dead."
Hearing the news, Grover almost tripped and fell.
He roared, "It's impossible! She was still doing well, even shouting at me when I left earlier!
"Did she send you here to trick me back? Well, tell her that I'm not gonna fall for this kind of trick again!"
Leila was so anxious that she almost cried.
"It's real, Mr. Bairstow. The hospital called. They said Mrs. Bairstow and the baby were both dead. I kept calling you, but you didn't answer."
Hearing this, Grover suddenly remembered that his phone was out of battery because Serena had used it for a few hours today.
Not daring to think further, he grabbed his keys and dashed out.
The two hospitals were very close. After getting in the car, Grover stepped on the gas and dashed to another hospital.
The director of the hospital came out to greet Grover.
Grover growled, "Get straight to the point. Where's Frieda?"
The director shook his head regretfully and sighed.
"Mr. Bairstow, please calm down first. Mrs. Bairstow was poisoned. Besides, she was drugged with abortion pills and didn't get the treatment timely, so..."
Grover interrupted him impatiently, "What nonsense are you talking about? Frieda told you to say that? That bitch! I surely have to teach her a good lesson!"
While speaking, he strode into the hospital.
When he strode into the morgue, he even stumbled a bit.
